Health food company Hunter & Gather has entered the ketchup sector with three tomato sauce offerings with no added sugars or sweeteners.
With traditional ketchup sales reportedly in sharp decline, Hunter & Gather aims to catch up with mayonnaise sales with its tomato-themed sauces. The range comes in three flavours – classic tomato, barbecue and spicy chipotle – to meet the growing appetite for exotic and spicy condiments.
The unsweetened ketchup range is made using only organic tomatoes and no added sugars, dates, fruits or sweeteners. Instead, the company uses a blend of spices and vinegars to create its trio of ‘tangy’ sauces.
According to Hunter & Gather, its products have 79% less total sugars than the leading ketchup with less than 1g of carbs per serve; meeting the needs of diabetics, and paleo, gluten-free and keto diets.
The unsweetened ketchups join the company’s portfolio of cold-pressed avocado cooking oils and condiments, supplementary MCT oil, collagen peptides and marine collagen, and raw Icelandic lamb ‘real food’ supplements.
“As the leading provider of best-in-class condiments (sugar, grain and seed oil-free), we felt we had a bigger role to play, so responded to our growing tribe and retailer request for a genuine, ‘low total sugar’ tomato sauce without sweeteners,” said Hunter & Gather co-founder, Amy Moring.
She added: “Whilst others might claim that ‘no added sugar’ tomato sauces already exist; a closer inspection of their back-of-pack ingredient decks show an alarming natural sugar presence (around 16.5g of sugar per 100g Vs our 6.6g) from added syrups, sugary fruits or a host of sweeteners that coat the palate. We wanted to provide true innovation whilst also tasting delicious – like we did with our avocado mayonnaise range for the wider condiments category.”
Hunter & Gather’s ketchups will retail for £3.59 per bottle and will be found in a variety of UK stores such as Booths, with Ocado and Wholefoods to follow.
