“The IDF Elie Metchnikoff Prize 2010 will be awarded in three categories to scientists who have made outstanding discoveries in the field of interaction of lactic acid bacteria and probiotics in fermented milks and contribution of fermented milks to human nutrition, health and longevity,” said Luc Morelon, president of the Yogurt & Live Fermented Milks Association and chairman of the award committee.
All applications will be assessed by an independent award expert panel of five internationally recognised scientists in the field of fermented milks/probiotics for nutrition and health.
This prize pays tribute to Nobel prize winner Prof Elie Metchnikoff, who discussed the concept of creating beneficial health effects through ingestion of living bacteria. His book – The Prolongation of Life – appeared on the international scene almost 100 years ago. In his publication, Prof Metchnikoff suggested that the longevity of certain ethnic groups was related to their ingestion of fermented milk products and that these products maintain the good balance of the intestinal microbiota.
The Elie Metchnikoff Prize 2010 award ceremony will take place during the IDF Symposia on Science and Technology of Fermented Milk and on Microstructure of Dairy Products in Tromsö, Norway, on 9 June 2010.
