A UK-based company has developed a simple food management tool that provides a visual aid for determining the remaining shelf life of food and drink products.
The Food Minder incorporates an LED light, which can be used to remind the consumer of the expiry status of food and drink. Placed on top of or in front of products in the fridge, it relies on coloured blinks of light to indicate the time left before a food item becomes inedible.
The time left on food can be manually overwritten to allow more accurate, user-determined approximations of the remaining shelf life of products such as milk and eggs, which often feature excessively cautious use by dates.
The device offers an effective solution for saving money and reducing food waste, with Food Minder pointing out that £60’s worth of food is wasted in the UK every month – the equivalent of roughly 7.5% of the average family of four’s grocery shop.
The gadget will be made available to buy later in the month.
A spokesperson for the company said: “With the Food Minder, you are able to take one quick glance into the fridge or cupboard, and instantly know what needs to be eaten or drunk first. And if you can’t consume in time, you can move suitable items into the freezer for use at a later date. The Food Minder isn’t just limited for use with food and drink. You can use on anything that needs to be consumed within a prescribed period of time, for example medication or eye drops.
“The Food Minder can save you money, time and reduce your household food waste.”
