Bioenergy Life Science’s (BLS) Bill Visser tells FoodBev about Bioenergy Ribose®, the company’s flagship sugar that doesn’t act like a sugar in the body, but instead works to increase levels of adenosine triphosphate (ATP) to increase the pool of energy that consumers have available to them throughout the day.
As Visser tells FoodBev’s Alex Clere, this can be beneficial to multiple consumer segments. “It can be geared towards middle-aged folks,” he says. “Sometimes their energy drops throughout the day and Ribose will give them a boost to help them get through the day and continue on with the chores and activities that they want to accomplish.
“It’s also geared towards athletes; we actually sponsor Olympic athletes and Ribose is used in their training to help give them additional energy, to power through those workouts and also for recovery. They use it as part of their dietary intake. They take probably up to 15–20g of Ribose per day – before, during and after their fitness events, their training.”
“You have a higher reserve, you have more energy to keep going, to push through workouts, and also to aid in recovery as well.”
With more consumers taking an interest in their health, and a rise in so-called ‘casual fitness’, there are opportunities for companies like Bioenergy Life Science providing they get their messaging right.
Visser says he believes consumers are learning more about what they need: “I think people are learning. They’re very interested to get an advantage on how to nourish their bodies so that they can recover properly, so that they can also energise their bodies to be able to workout and be able to be active.
“Ribose is manufactured in your body, it’s a natural ingredient. Your body produces it but very slowly, so when you expend energy you’re using up all the Ribose and all the ATP that you have stored. Without Ribose, you cannot have ATP for the cells to draw upon.”
