Dr Itay Shafat, a product manager for cognitive ingredients at Frutarom Health, tells FoodBev’s Alex Clere that the future of Neuravena and other ingredients within Frutarom’s cognitive portfolio is “very, very promising”.
Frutarom Health is the functional ingredients business of the wider Frutarom group, and together both the health side and the flavours side work together to secure products that deliver on both cognitive benefits and taste. “The slogan for Frutarom is ‘a passion for taste and health’,” Dr Shafat explains. “Frutarom is first and foremost a taste company. Combining [this with Frutarom Health]… you can have a refreshing drink, tasty drink, with the health benefit of the Neuravena.
“This is a very, very important thing: for brands to be able to offer a full package of a functional drink that will be tasty on the one hand, and healthy on the other. We can support the full package.”
Neuravena is based on green oat extract and for it, Frutarom had to go back in time to find an ancient strain of green oats that would do the job. Today, green oats are very different to what they were 100 or 1,000 years ago, Dr Shafat explains.
Dr Shafat continued: “With everything that is going on in the market, I think that Frutarom Health is going to be one of the drivers of growth for Frutarom and for the industry as a whole. The entire taste industry is combining more and more the concept of taste and health, and I think that Frutarom Health – with its interesting portfolio – I think that this segment of the company can contribute to the success of the company in the coming years.”
A week before Vitafoods Europe in Geneva, Frutarom announced that it was being bought by flavours company IFF for $7.1 billion. At the show, Frutarom’s Yoni Glickman told FoodBev that the benefits were for both companies, not just IFF, and that the acquisition would be complementary between two companies with completely different client profiles: Frutarom has traditionally targeted small-to-medium companies, while IFF has more top-tier customers.
