FoodBev’s Martin White spoke with Glanbia Nutritionals marketing manager Dagmar Ortlepp about the high-protein concepts that Glanbia showcased at Health Ingredients Europe 2018, including a high-protein trail bar concept and a plant-protein ready-to-mix powder.
Both concepts aim to cater to the needs of increasingly health-conscious mainstream consumers, who are looking to consume protein through convenient, nutritious and good-tasting formats.
The trail bar concept contained Glanbia’s BarFlex 191 whey protein, Glanbia’s gluten-free OatPure oats and a range of clean label ingredients such as cranberries, chocolate, almonds.
Meanwhile, the vanilla-flavoured, plant-based ready-to-mix protein powder was made with Glanbia’s HarvestPro Pea Protein, providing a gluten-free, dairy-free and soy-free beverage which has a clean taste, without the need to add additional sugar.
Dagmar discussed the importance of the healthy snacking trend, and how the demands of mainstream consumers are proving increasingly important for the company.
“When looking at the market, we realised that the snack area is moving very much into replacing meals in a healthy way.
“Consumers want to have something that is easy to eat, that tastes good and that adds health value to their daily nutrition on the go.
“We see that protein is a very important ingredient because the association of health with protein is known by mainstream consumers.
“What is interesting is that the protein is not now coming from bars which have been adapted from sports nutrition to the mainstream market, but people are looking to add protein to mainstream products like confectionery, muesli and cereal bars.”
“The mainstream consumer want to have something which tastes good, and that feels natural. Nobody is looking for a chewy, hardening bar with a high-protein content, it should really be a bar with a nice texture which feels both natural and indulgent.”
