Omya’s Katja Reichenbach, head of market development & innovation consumer goods, spoke with FoodBev’s Alex Clere about the company’s range of natural calcium carbonates, which it showcased at Health Ingredients Europe 2018.
One particular concept on show at the show was the Omyafit prototype, an instant drink in a sachet portion which was fortified with Omya’s highly-concentrated Omya Calcipur calcium carbonate.
Omya says that including Omya Calcipur in powdered beverages is a highly efficient way to fortify products with calcium without affecting stability or taste and without providing excess sedimentation.
The Omyafit concept contained 30% of the daily recommended intake of calcium, allowing a “high in calcium” nutritional claim, and the concept also provided a fortified multivitamin beverage which also contains taurine, guarana and caffeine to provide an instant energy boost.
“Omyafit is a concept for instant beverages, and this is where we see the highest potential in the market.
“When we look at product launches across the industry, there’s a lot of innovation in instant beverages because they are very convenient not only for energy management, but also in the nutritional shakes, protein shakes etc, so we see complementary solutions for our ingredients here.
“As we offer our ingredients in a powdered form, they can be easily mixed with other ingredients, and they combine very nicely with other powdered solutions.”
While beverages are a key focus area for Omya, Reichenbach stressed that the company could also support other applications: “So beyond beverages, we have solution for nutraceuticals, but also for bakery, confectionery and dairy alternatives, which is an important trend for us.
