Former England rugby international Jonny Wilkinson has agreed a deal with UK retailer Sainsbury’s which will make products from his No1 Kombucha soft drink brand available to UK consumers for the first time.
Three drinks will initially be available in the No1 Kombucha range: Ginger & turmeric, passionfruit & goji and raspberry, pomegranate & hibiscus.
The drinks are made using a blend of filtered water, organic green tea, organic cane sugar and SCOBY (symbiotic colony of bacteria and yeast), as well as different fruit juices for each flavour.
All flavours contain fewer than 50 calories per serving and all come under the UK’s newly-introduced sugar levy, and no artificial flavours are used in the drinks.
Jonny Wilkinson, founder of No1 Kombucha said: “I have enjoyed the benefits of kombucha for years, brewing it at home with my wife and drinking it daily.
“Sainsbury’s is the perfect retail partner in which to launch my brand and achieve its goal of making kombucha genuinely accessible to people throughout the UK.
“Six years ago I started a journey to create a product that would offer a healthier choice for consumers. I chose to launch a kombucha drink because it is a living food that can have a positive impact on wellbeing.
“We spent a considerable amount of time refining the recipe to make it as delicious as possible and an easy choice for consumers wanting to make small, positive steps towards improving their health.”
Richard McNeil, front of store soft drinks buyer at Sainsbury’s added: “We recognise our customers are constantly on the lookout for refreshing, on-trend, healthier soft drinks, and so we’re delighted to bring them all the benefits of No1 Kombucha.
“It’s clear there is growing appetite for ‘living’ food and drink with a big rise in the popularity of fermented products, for example, kefir, sauerkraut and kimchi products.
“We’re making these easily accessible to our customers and are locating No1 Kombucha along with other chilled soft drinks rather than with more specialist lifestyle products.”
Drinks in the No1 Kombucha range will be available nationwide from Sainsbury’s stores from May 2018 in 275ml bottles, with a suggested retail price of £1.95.
