UK law states that “potato crisps, potato sticks, potato puffs and similar products made from the potato, or from potato flour, or from potato starch”, are subject to a tax of 15%.
The ruling by the three judges on the Court of Appeal overturns last year’s ruling that the popular snack was more like a cake or chocolate biscuit than a potato snack.
According to Proctor & Gamble, Pringles contain only 42% potato, but this was deemed enough to warrant the hefty tax bill.
