Lactalis Ingredients has unveiled a new clean-label whey protein range made with sunflower lecithin.
Lecithin is added to whey protein powder to help the powder become instant and clump-free for products such as protein shakes. Lecithin is often sourced from soy, but this makes it unsuitable for consumers with soy allergies, and so the demand for products made using sunflower lecithin is increasing.
According to Lactalis, sunflower lecithin is hypoallergenic, sustainable, guaranteed as GMO-free.
The new whey protein made with sunflower lecithin will be available through Lactalis’ Pronativ native whey protein and Laktein whey protein ranges. The company claims that the sunflower lecithin whey protein provides ‘good solubility, neutral taste, 79 to 95% protein on dry matter, and low lactose reference.’
The release of the new whey protein aims to cater to the growing demand for clean-label and natural products, with many consumers “looking for clean label and natural products that reassure them.”
According to Mintel figures provided by Lactalis, in the UK, 46% of consumers think that a clean label means the product is “good for you” and 46% think that it is highly nutritious, making clean-label products an attractive prospect in the sports nutrition sector.
Disclaimer: The original version of this article stated that the whey protein range was ‘allergen-free’. Lactalis has since stated that this is not the case, and only applies to the sunflower lecithin component of the range.
