US-based startup Larq has created the ‘world’s first’ self-cleaning, reusable water bottle, which uses UV light to purify water and the bottle itself.
The Larq Bottle uses patented UV-C LED technology to purify water and the inner surfaces of the water bottle by eliminating harmful bacteria and viruses through a photochemical reaction.
To purify the water, consumers press a button on the bottle, and the bottle also has a self-cleaning mode which activates every two hours.
Larq has created the bottle to simultaneously cater to the consumer demand for pure water and to reduce the use of single-use plastics.
Justin Wang, co-founder of Larq said: “We know that pure water on-the-go and stinky bottles are the two primary pain points affecting one’s adoption of reusable bottles.
“LARQ’s proprietary UV-C LED technology is integrated into a beautifully designed product that delivers pure water from a self-cleaning bottle, and directly addresses these complaints.”
Dr David Weber, M.D., MPH Faculty at the UNC School of Medicine added: “UV Light has been demonstrated to be a safe and effective method to disinfect water.
“UV is environmentally friendly, leaves no residuals and is microbicidal – effectively killing germs.”
The Larq Bottle is now available for purchase in five colours, with a suggested retail price of $95.
