Lavazza has begun construction of its first roasting and packing plant in the US, in order to support the Italian coffee company’s growth in the market.
The plant – which is expected to open in October 2021 – is an expansion of the Lavazza Professional facility in West Chester, Pennsylvania, and will add 1,000 square-feet to the current 18,000 square-foot facility.
The new plant will integrate existing and new capabilities for the company, enabling it to serve roasted and ground coffee to the US market – which was previously sourced from Italy.
Lavazza says this shift will also reduce its greenhouse gas emissions, which is in line with its ambition to neutralise its carbon footprint by the end of 2030.
The Italian coffee manufacturer also says the new plant will offer the possibility to increase its market efficiency in North America.
“North America continues to be a strategic growth market for Lavazza Group and opening this facility in the US will sharpen our competitive edge. We will more efficiently service our current customers and offer incentives to attract new ones,” said Davide Riboni, president and CEO BU Americas for Lavazza.
Eleuterio Quagliarini, Lavazza chief operations officer, said: “This is a very important step for the Lavazza Group and for its future development in the US, a country that has always been of fundamental importance to us.
“In addition, the investment is made within a production facility that we acquired few years ago, which immediately proved to be the ideal context for developing this new Lavazza reality in the US, principally thanks to the passion and expertise of the people who work there.”
