Mars has partnered with the KLBD – the UK’s leading kosher certification board – to ensure that Mars Bars, Snickers, Galaxy Block, Galaxy Ripple, Galaxy Minstrels and three flavours of Tracker bars are now kosher certified.
The official signing of contracts took place on 4 June and their certification will be updated in the forthcoming Kosher Nosh Guide 2009 at the end of June.
Kosher certification involves detailed investigation and approval of all ingredients and processing aids used, and also the signing of a legal contract. With the new agreement in place, Mars will not make any changes to any of the certified products without Beth Din approval, and these products will also be subject to regular inspections by a professional KLBD inspector.
Last year, Mars announced that Mars, Twix, Milky Way and Snickers bars will all become free from artificial colours, flavourings and preservatives. Each of these products are now clearly labelled on-pack, detailing guideline daily amounts for the intake of calories, fats (including saturates) sugar and salt. The recent kosher announcement is the latest of a number of announcements affecting some of Mars’ most iconic brands.
Rabbi Conway, executive director of Kashrut Division of the London Beth Din, said: “I’m delighted that one of the world’s leading brands has recognised the significance of the kosher market and has opted to become fully certified by the KLBD. We know the kosher certification of these six classic products will be greeted with much excitement by the kosher consumers, and we hope a wide range of further KLBD-certified Mars products will follow.”
Fiona Dawson, MD of Mars Chocolate, said: “We want our products to be enjoyed by as many consumers as possible. This is the latest of a series of announcements affecting some of our most iconic products, and we’re delighted to be working with KLBD to give our consumers what they want.”
