It brings a new meaning to the term “chocolate chip”.
McDonald’s in Japan will begin offering French fries with a topping of chocolate sauce, as part of a new dish known as the McChoco Potato.
Launching next week, the new topping features both white and milk chocolate, providing a “harmony of sweetness and saltiness”, the company said in a statement. It is the first time that the fast food retailer has offered a sweet sauce for its fries.
A spokesperson for McDonald’s Japan said: “Japanese customers can now enjoy an ideal combination of McDonald’s French fries drizzled with two types of chocolate sauces – chocolate with cacao flavour and white milk chocolate.”
Japan has long been a hotbed of innovation for fast food companies. In 2009, Burger King launched an “angry burger” with jalapeño peppers, hot sauce, onions, cheese and bacon. It has since developed two variations on the black burger, each featuring black buns, black cheese and black tomato sauce made from squid ink and bamboo charcoal.
McDonald’s Japan has itself experimented with menu items such as a shrimp burger, carbonara chicken sandwich, bacon and potato pie, and both wasabi and sour plum McNugget dipping sauces.
There are currently no plans to launch the chocolate-topped fries in any other country.
