Online retailer Musclefood has released what the company says is the UK’s first range of wonky steaks.
Like many other wonky food initiatives, the Beautifully Wonky range aims to combat issues such as food waste and perceptions of food as being perfect.
Musclefood founder Darren Beale said: “It’s a shame that certain steak cuts end up being mincemeat just because they don’t fit the strict weight and size dimensions that restaurants want.”
Included in the range are smaller and oddly-shaped cuts, as well as those which fall outside of eight and thickness parameters required by retailers and restaurants. This may go towards efforts to alter perceptions of the image of food for consumers, potentially reducing waste in the service sector also.
Beale continued: “Many of our suppliers have the same issue – their clients require the product to be the perfect size and specifications. So we are confident that if demand outstrips our current supply, we can work with suppliers to solve some of their wastage problems with steaks.”
The steaks are being sold in bulk for as little as £1 each, offering customers and consumers an affordable way to combat food waste.
