In the US, Nestlé has vowed to improve the nutritional profile of some of its frozen pizza and snack brands by eliminating artificial flavours and cutting levels of salt.
The changes – to be made across the Digiorno, Tombstone, California Pizza Kitchen, Jack’s, Hot Pockets and Lean Pockets brands – build on Nestlé’s ongoing efforts to improve the nutritional and ingredient profile of its products while maintaining their great taste, the food group said.
All products across the brands will now be free from artificial flavours and contain 10% less sodium compared to two years ago.
Nestlé Pizza and Snacking Division president John Carmichael said: “We know people want to feel good about the foods they eat, and they’re seeking foods made with fewer artificial ingredients and less sodium. As one of the nation’s largest food companies, Nestlé is listening to consumers and delivering on their desire for convenient, great-tasting foods that have an improved nutritional profile.”
The company will reflect its latest commitment in the launch of several new products during the spring and summer – including California Pizza Kitchen’s gluten-free crispy thin crust pizzas and hand tossed-style pizzas, Digiorno Pizzeria thin, Hot Pockets snack bites and breakfast bites, and Tombstone’s limited edition diablo and bratwurst pizzas.
Nestlé will also use product packaging across these ranges to help educate consumers on choosing appropriate portion sizes and incorporating a range of fruits and vegetables into their diet. In all, nutritional guidance will be available on more than 250 pizza and snack products, the Swiss giant said.
Nutrition, health and wellness manager Cassie Hoover added: “Portion guidance is our way of making it easier for consumers to make informed choices that are right for them and their family. We’ll continue to look for ways to help people enjoy our pizza and snack options as part of a well-balanced, great-tasting and nutritious diet.”
