The research shows that a 15% decrease in salt intake prevents three times as many deaths from cardiovascular disease as does a 20% decrease in smoking.
Hypertension and the corresponding risk of cardiovascular diseases are the most dangerous consequences of too much salt, as are stomach cancer, osteoporosis, kidney stones, obesity and diabetes.
According to this study, by reducing salt intake by 3g per day per person, about a thousand Norwegian lives a year could be saved.
