Wensleydale with Sour Cherry & Plum will be available on the retailer’s deli counters from this month.
12 months ago, Norseland Ltd and Tesco set out to find the brightest and most creative, young business brains. More than 40 youngsters from four local schools were invited to pitch their suggestions for a new cheese in a Dragons’ Den-style competition, to be in with the chance of seeing their product stocked in the UK’s leading supermarket.
Following a gruelling presentation, the traditionally crumbly texture of Wensleydale was chosen as the base cheese to complement the natural, bittersweet flavour of the sour cherry and plum. It was this combination that attracted Tesco to the unique product.
Jo Wren of Tesco said: “Tesco’s commitment to locally sourcing products and supporting the local community was demonstrated throughout this whole project, and it allowed us to continue to work at a local level, supporting local businesses.”
Ed Benham from Norseland Ltd added: “We’re really excited that the cheese is going to be sold in Tesco and can’t wait to see it on shelf. We work very closely with organisations in our local community, and to see all the children’s hard work come to fruition and culminate in a national listing is fantastic. The Wensleydale with Sour Cherry and Plum will complement our blended cheese portfolio well, and although we hope to enjoy sales across the country, we expect that it will be especially popular in Somerset where people will get to taste something created by their local school children.”
