The first ever awards of its kind in the UK, the BSFA is a challenger to New York’s ‘Vendys’, and a chance to highlight the great good-to-go traditional tastes prepared by street food vendors, who defy the high-rents and overheads of bricks and mortar.
The event is the brainchild of UK TV and print food critic Richard Johnson. He said: “It was a summer lunchtime – in a New York park – and Marco Pierre White and I were hung-over from a night of Sambuca at Jay-Z’s party. Sat on the grass, and eating a street-vendor’s burger slathered with ketchup… I decided, then and there, that I would do something about Britain’s street food. Once I had ordered another burger.”
With the final rounds of the Awards about to take place in foodie market town, Ludlow, on 11-12 September, the finalists have already been chosen. According to Richard Johnson’s blog they include “a pink VW camper van serving up freshly-brewed tea and handmade cupcakes, a polished Airstream trailer with the fattest, pinkest burgers you ever tasted, and a Bedouin tent offering up ‘the ultimate British stir-fry’.”
The finalists are, in alphabetical order, Banh Mi 11, Ca Phe Vn, Chipper, Churros Garcia, Daddy Donkey, Eat My Pies, Fire In The Hole, Greengages, Healthy Yummies, Indie Coffee, Jamon Jamon, La Grotta Ices, Laughing Stock, Lulubelles Lunches, Manic Organic, Meatwagon, Mother Bhumi, Prufrock Coffee, Rocket And Relish, Sporeboys and The Fish Hut.
The categories are: Best Pie, Best Dessert, Best Cold Drink, Best Hot Drink, Best Main Dish, Best Sandwich, Best Looking Mobiler, Best Snack, and Best Of The Best.
