Sustainability is a highly topical issue that currently dominates widely disparate areas. It’s relevant to politicians and sociologists as well as to brand owners, material suppliers, designers and, last but not least, to consumers.
In its role as a facilitator for discussing and sharing ideas and opinions, the Pan-European Brand Design Association, PDA, lays increasing emphasis on this key issue.
Nine design agencies from Italy, Greece, the Netherlands, Russia and Switzerland were given a fictitious briefing to develop sustainable packaging designs for two different products: soya milk and wine/spirits.
The aim was to create a sustainable and eco-friendly solution which, at the same time, considers the efficiency of the packaging as a sales tool. The challenge was to overcome the apparent conflict between an appealing design and the recyclability of the packaging material. The agencies were asked to develop a structural packaging design (shape and material) and a visual identity for the product (packaging design).
The results of this project were an impressive range of sustainable packaging design solutions that have been exhibited at the iPAC-IMA Fair, which took place in March 2009 in Milan. At the same venue, PDA had organised a workshop dedicated to the subject, under the title ‘Packaging design in the service of sustainability’. Illustrated are a few examples of the sustainable packaging projects from the soya milk category.
