The company has set a goal of using 25% less fuel and 20% less water and energy in its operations by 2015. It will also begin making Aquafina bottles at its water purification centres, which eliminates transportation costs and avoids the need for secondary packaging during transit for its 24-packs.
Pepsi has highlighted that the move will help the company save 34 million kilos of plastic a year with its Eco-Fina bottle, which weighs just 10.9g. The company believes it is the lightest 50cl bottle of any bottled water sold in the US.
Nestlé Waters North America plans to reduce the weight of its 50cl PET bottle by another 15% to 10.5g later in 2009.
