Devon brand Portlebay Popcorn has launched a new cappuccino popcorn in a bid to inject some energy into the UK’s coffee breaks.
Hand-popped and manufactured at the company’s facility near Plymouth, the new flavour is available in 75g size formats with a recommended retail price of £1.70. It is gluten-free and contains just 115 calories per serving. The product is already available in Budgens stores, independent delicatessens and farm shops nationwide – and will be added to retailers including Tesco, Soho Coffee and Thorntons’ coffee shops later in the year.
Its nautical-style branding has been inspired by Portlebay Popcorn founder and managing director Jonty White’s passion for sailing, and the relatively new company has experienced 230% sales growth during the last 12 months. They craft all of their popcorn at the company’s poppery in the southwest of the county.
Portlebay Popcorn has claimed that the innovation is the first cappuccino flavour of popcorn to be launched in the UK – although at Avex 2015, Sian Griffiths spoke to Mark Leddy from Ten Acre Crisps, which has also developed a cappuccino popcorn variant for the UK market.
White said: “Flavour is king here at the poppery, so we’re very excited to launch the first cappuccino popcorn in the UK. With notes of silky caramel and a bitter hint of coffee, it’s the perfect pick-me-up.”
A brand spokesperson continued: ”The Portlebay team believes that popcorn is one of those simple things in life that just seems to make you smile, and every brightly coloured packet contains a scoop full of that outdoor, sunny and carefree feeling. With its deliciously smooth and creamy frothy coffee characteristics, the new cappuccino flavour will certainly do that. A treat to liven up your beach picnic, packed lunch in the park or coffee date with the girls, Portlebay Popcorn is an ideal alternative on-the-go snack.”
