Healthy breakfast brand Quoats has rolled out a range of three ‘quirky’ porridge pots with quinoa, oats and flax.
The brand is the brainchild of Rob Barker and Jen Kent, who developed the product as a healthy breakfast to be enjoyed on the go. Their background research highlighted that 96% of adults eat breakfast on a daily basis and 58% of people try to eat healthily all or most of the time, according to Mintel.
The figures also showed that the value of the porridge segment had increased by 87% between 2009 and 2014.
The new pots of Quoats are available in original, coconut and raspberry, and date and pecan flavours.
They are a combination of quinoa, oats and flax – all sourced from British farms. The quinoa provides a complete source of protein, while oats contain beta glucan, which is proven to help maintain normal blood cholesterol levels, Quoats said. Meanwhile, flax is an excellent source of omega-3. Consumers can simply add boiling water to the pot and stir, and in three minutes the healthy breakfast will be ready to eat.
Quoats co-founder Jen Kent said: “Rob and I are very active people and have a keen interest in outdoor sports and healthy eating. I have been inspired by super food enthusiasts such as Hemsley and Hemsley – and super foods and high protein grains and seeds such as flax, quinoa and oats have a large presence in my daily diet.
“Rob and I both have farming links – I am a dairy farmer’s daughter from Shropshire and Rob farms in Yorkshire with his parents as well as working as a crop consultant. With such a huge interest in provenance and traceability in the UK market, we understand how important it is to source our ingredients from the very best farms. We actively visited, networked and handpicked our farmers to source our British quinoa, oats and flax from.”
And Barker added: “There are already lots of oat-based breakfast products on the market but we wanted to add value to our product and do something unique – therefore we added flax and quinoa into the mix. And Quoats isn’t just a breakfast product – it can be a healthy snack for throughout the day. There is currently enormous media exposure about the amount of sugar in UK diets and with obesity being a growing concern, we feel the ‘no added sugar’ aspect will be a real attraction to the Quoats product – with each pot being packed with natural goodness.
“Taste is our absolute priority which is why we’ve developed our three initial flavours after many months of testing, critiquing, adjusting and improving – and now we have something we’re extremely proud of.
