Sial Paris 2014 played host to 17 Welsh companies on the Food and Drink Wales stand. Rebecca Evans, deputy minister for farming and food for the Welsh government, was there to talk about the priority for exports from Wales. Interview by Claire Phoenix.
A report entitled ‘Towards Sustainable Growth: An Action Plan for the Food and Drink Industry 2014–2020’ sets out the Welsh government’s ambition to grow sales in the food and drink sector by 30% to £7bn by the year 2020. The development of existing and new export markets for Welsh food and drink products is essential towards realising this vision.
In terms of market access, Europe still accounts for over 80% of all UK food and non-alcoholic drink exports, and presents the least difficult platform on which to build further Welsh food and drink exports.
