Rémy Cointreau has agreed to acquire the assets of Seattle-based single-malt whiskey producer Westland Distillery.
The acquisition further expands Rémy Cointreau’s portfolio into the rapidly growing high-end segment of the single-malt whiskey category, the company said.
The transaction is expected to close before the end of the year.
It follows the group’s acquisition of Islay Scotch whisky distillery Bruichladdich in 2012, and amid speculation that it could tie up a deal for organic French whisky distillery Domaine des Hautes Glaces before the end of the year.
“Westland’s mission is to produce world-class American single-malt whiskey,” Paris-based Rémy Cointreau said. “Rooted in one of the world’s best possible climates for barley, Westland crafts a truly authentic single-malt whiskey with a sense of place. The distillery is firmly committed to pushing the category of single-malt whiskey forward by utilising new varietals of barley and oak, exploring concepts such as terroir, and championing distinctiveness.
“In addition, Westland is at the vanguard of the growing American single-malt whiskey movement that aims to secure a firm description for the category in the United States and abroad.”
