Meat processor Smithfield Foods has revealed plans to launch a new range of plant-based protein products under its Pure Farmland brand.
The line will feature eight soy-based products, including breakfast patties, meatballs, burger patties and pre-seasoned protein starters. All are free from both gluten and dairy.
Smithfield said given that “soy is a complete protein, it provides levels of all essential amino acids that many other plant proteins do not provide”.
John Pauley, Smithfield Foods chief commercial officer, said: “We’re thrilled to announce the launch of this new product portfolio under our Pure Farmland brand. We’ve been exploring the alternative protein space, and have taken our time to get it right.
“With this launch, we are bringing together our expertise in creating market-leading food products, our organisational commitment to sustainability and our deep understanding of flexitarian consumers to deliver a broad variety of flavourful plant-based protein choices that consumers want and can afford at a great value.”
Pure Farmland plant-based protein products will be available in the US as of mid-September.
The announcement comes a week after Brazilian beef producer Marfrig reached an agreement with Archer Daniels Midland for the production and sale of plant-based protein products in Brazil.
In April, Canadian meat company Maple Leaf Foods and its Greenleaf Foods subsidiary announced plans to construct a $310 million plant-based protein food processing facility in Indiana.
