Starbucks will start offering coconut milk as an alternative to dairy and soy in its US locations, following suggestions from consumers.
The idea was raised on the company’s crowdsourcing platform, which allows consumers to post suggestions for improvements to the coffee chain that fellow users can then rate. The idea received more than 84,000 votes, making it the second most popular of all time; it was beaten by a similar suggestion involving almond milk, which was overlooked because of allergen concerns.
It fits into a wider industry trend towards coconut as a dairy alternative; in January, we reported that new research suggested that consumption of coconut water in the UK alone could reach 25m litres before the end of this year.
Another popular idea on its crowdsourcing blog is to adjust the company’s loyalty scheme, so that customers receive one star for each drink purchased and not for each transaction.
