The Starpack Industry Awards 2008 gala dinner and ceremony, held at the Café Royal on 22 May, served up a feast of awards for the food manufacturing sector with almost 20 Gold, Silver and Bronze Stars recognising excellence and innovation in food packaging.
Starpack is organised by IOP: The Packaging Society and this year’s lead sponsor was WRAP, the Waste & Resources Action Programme.
The judges’ favourite, taking both a Gold Star in the Technical Development and the Consumer Products categories, as well as bagging the Special Award for Consumer Convenience was Crown Food Europe with its EasyLift easy open end development.
Nestlé Purina Petcare Europe is currently using the new 73mm ends on its 400g cans of petfood in the Netherlands. But new markets for this user-friendly product are expected to open up soon, particularly in the food sector.
In Best Food Design, Crown Speciality Packaging received a Gold Star with a coffee tin for Fortnum & Mason’s 300th Anniversary Bolling Coffee.
Easypack and POP Display Group came up trumps with a Gold Star in the Retail Ready and Display & Collation group for “an effective self-vend solution which means the product is always displayed at the front of the pack”.
The easy to erect display carton for Tetley Fruit Teas has a gravity fed system for eight round tubs of tea. The RRP has an integral ramp to roll the products backwards for ease of filling while the inner corrugated fitting divides the two columns of tubs to avoid nesting.
A Silver Star in Best Food Design went to Beatson Clark for a square Oxo Stock bottle that “reflects the style of one of the UK’s most iconic brands”. The judges also felt that the innovative 160ml square amber glass bottle enhanced the rich, dark qualities of the concentrated stocks it contains. This pack also picked up Silver in the Best Brand Design group.
Of particular interest to the Environmental Lobby was the award of two Silver Stars to the 2 Sisters Food Group’s FormShrink whole chicken pack for Tesco. It utilises a puncture-resistant film supplied by Kerhalon UK and a specially adapted R550 thermoformer from Multivac. The strong environmental credentials merited one of its Awards for Environment – New Developments. The other Silver was in the Technical Development category, which was sponsored by the PPMA Show 2008.
Another recipient of two Silver Stars was Chesapeake Branded Packaging for its Filthy Bites carton for The Filthy Food Company. The stars came in the Best Brand Design and Best Food Design sections.
Mars Complementary Petcare Europe won Silver for its Pedigree Joint Care daily pack in the Consumer Products category.
DS Smith Speciality Packaging, Belper achieved a Silver Star in the Retail Ready and Display & Collation category with its RRP for Cadbury Luxury Chocolate Drink.
Eight Bronze Stars were awarded to food packaging entries plus three individual award winners were food related.
