Here at FoodBev Media, we are always on the lookout for innovative products which could revolutionalise the food and beverage industries.
With this in mind, we often come across some unique and quirky products. Here are five of our favourites from 2017.
Shower beer
A Swedish brewer has teamed up with Stockholm-based design agency Snask to create a beer that you can drink in the shower.
The 10% ABV Shower Beer from PangPang Brewery is a ‘sweet but strong’ pale ale bottled in 18cl bottles.
The small packaging size is meant so that consumers can drink the beer in three sips while standing in the shower and getting ready for a night out.
Insect burgers and balls
Swiss start-up Essento introduced a range of burgers and balls made from insects, going on sale in supermarket Coop.
The burgers contain mealworms, rice, carrots and leeks, as well as oregano and chilli. The insect balls consist of a mix of mealworms, chickpeas, onions, coriander and parsley.
Essento said the products are made with natural ingredients with a high nutritional potential.
Ruby chocolate
Swiss chocolatier Barry Callebaut claims to have invented a fourth type of chocolate after milk, dark and white – called ruby.
Made from the ruby cocoa bean, the chocolate has an intense taste and is said to be unique because its fresh berry fruitiness and reddish colour are naturally occurring.
Ruby is said to offer a new taste experience, which is not bitter, milky or sweet. To create the new variant, no berries, berry flavour or colours were added.
Edible Straws
UK-based disposables manufacturer Herald Plastic has developed a novel range of edible straws, which consumers can eat – rather than discard – after use.
The straws are essentially sweets, Herald Plastic said, which can last in fizzy drinks or milkshakes for up to 40 minutes without softening or breaking.
They contain roughly 27kcal and 7g of sugar per straw.
Charcoal-infused drinks
Beverage brand Wow has expanded its product range with the launch of its new drink containing activated charcoal, Dark Detox.
Three variants – lemon, lemon and mint, and raspberry – have gone on sale in Sainsbury’s with a recommended retail price of £2 for 250ml.
Dark Detox is a blend of fresh cold-pressed juice, filtered water, and activated charcoal, which Wow says helps maintain a healthy digestive tract by removing toxins.
