UK launches novel foods expert network to streamline regulatory processes

UK launches novel foods expert network to streamline regulatory processes

RSSL, a food and life science contract research organisation, has announced the establishment of the UK’s first Novel Foods Expert Network for Regulatory Challenges. Funded by Innovate UK, this initiative aims to enhance innovation and collaboration within the novel foods sector.

Developed in partnership with Imperial College London and The Supplant Company, NFX UK seeks to create a platform that accelerates the development and commercialisation of new food technologies.

The network will also assist the UK government in creating more transparent regulatory processes for novel foods, a move that could position the UK as a leader in the global novel foods market.

The NFX UK initiative has three primary objectives:

Centralised learning resources: The network will compile and develop resources to help industry stakeholders better understand regulatory processes, including data requirements and safety assessments for novel food ingredients.

Facilitation of industry connections: NFX UK aims to promote collaboration among food companies, analytical and technology organisations, scale-up and manufacturing facilities, consultants and research institutions.

Engagement with regulatory authorities: The network will provide insights into industry challenges and emerging tech, contributing to informed decision-making for more agile and proportionate regulations.

By fostering a collaborative environment among food manufacturers, service providers, academics and regulators, NFX UK intends to enhance regulatory science in the novel foods sector.

This integration of expertise and technology aims to ensure the safe and efficient market introduction of novel food products.

Jacinta George, managing director & VP at RSSL, said: “We are proud to lead the creation of NFX UK. At RSSL, we recognise the transformative potential of novel food innovation and are excited to support the vital cross-sector collaborations necessary to accelerate the delivery of more cost-effective, sustainable, and healthy food options.”

Rodrigo Ledesma-Amaro from Imperial College London, added: "This partnership fully aligns with our goals of the Bezos Centre for Sustainable Protein and the Microbial Food Hub at Imperial College London and we are very thankful to Innovate UK for their support”.

The establishment of NFX UK marks a significant step towards addressing the regulatory complexities faced by food manufacturers and innovators in the rapidly evolving landscape of novel foods.
