The Hershey Company has reassured American consumers that changes to the formula of Cadbury’s creme egg will not affect them.
On Monday, it was contested that Cadbury had “secretly” altered the chocolate blend used in the iconic creme egg, prompting an outcry from consumers on the brand’s social media accounts. But Hershey, which holds the rights over distribution of the product in the US market, has revealed that it wouldn’t be changing the recipe of its chocolate – because it had never used the implicated Dairy Milk blend.
“The Cadbury creme egg product sold in the US, that American consumers know and love, remains unchanged. The announcement only affects the product sold in the UK,” a Hershey spokesperson said.
The two variants of the product differ in their sweetness and the reported ingredients that are used to create the chocolate blend. Creme eggs in the UK use full cream milk whereas their US counterparts are believed to contain powdered milk.
Other measures that caused controversy earlier in the week, such as the change of creme egg size formats in the UK, will also not be applied to the US market.
