A New York-based company has developed a new alternative to breadcrumbs, made using gluten-free oats and natural spices.
Josie’s Coat of Oats is a seasoned oat coating mix that is entirely free from gluten, low in sodium and “healthier than breadcrumbs”, according to the brand. The good-for-you mix adds flavour and texture to vegetables, meat and other food, and has a shelf-life of one year.
The mix replaces breadcrumbs.
The brand is currently selling the product to independents across New York City, and is currently pursuing distributors to help the brand accelerate growth.
Founder Josephine Bologna developed the product as a means to avoid cooking with breadcrumbs, after noticing that much of her cooking, inspired by her Italian heritage, contained breadcrumbs. Breadcrumbs are carbohydrates that turn into sugars if you don’t get enough exercise, Bologna pointed out. When she was diagnosed with type-2 diabetes, she was forced to cut products made with white flour out of her diet, and so Josie’s Coat of Oats was born.
“Everyday more and more people are looking for ways to eat right, lose weight stay healthy and still maintain pleasure in the foods they eat,” the brand said. “Due to an increase of health issues for example, diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, heart disease and many more people are searching for ways to eat better…
“When you hear healthy, you think ‘not so tasty’. My product is not only healthy but it is very tasty with natural ingredients. I think you will love the taste and texture when you cook with Coat of Oats.”
The mixes are packed in 8oz stand-up pouches and feature a suggested retail price per unit of $7.99.
