The impressive range of entries in the Best ‘free from’ product category of the World Food Innovation Awards 2015, highlights a number of important trends. Here, Claire Phoenix looks at the innovations that are driving this category.
Apparently this is the fastest growing category on a global basis and there was plenty here to indicate just how innovative some brands are – supporting the strength and foresight of brands that are already successful in the marketplace.
Super Orange from Savse Smoothies is made using sophisticated high pressure processing to ensure every ounce of taste, nutrition and flavour is retained. Other favourites include a gluten and dairy free chocolate brownie mix from Delicious Alchemy, Lemon Muffins from Fria Gluten Free, and a gluten free Brioche style burger bun from Funnybones Foodservice.
Oats and ancient grains are high on the foodie agenda right now and Nice&Nobbly Granolas along with super premium ‘Thanks For Franks’ gluten free granola flapjacks mean that being gluten free no longer means doing without great tasting and sustaining foods.
Sugar free is a big trend right now and Sweet Rebellion from Taywell Ice Cream uses only natural sweeteners (stevia) yet is made with natural dairy products and is gluten free, lactose free and has good levels of calcium and B vitamins.
Perkier Foods also identified a need for gluten free porridge and has developed a high protein variety with easy 2 minute preparation. A range to make you smile is Holy Cow! Goan prawn curry sauce which is free from artificial flavours, preservatives, starch and nuts. Finalists and winners in the 15 categories of the World Food Innovation Awards 2015 were announced at a special ceremony at IFE at ExCel in London on 23 March. The IFE World Food Innovation Awards are sponsored by Tetra Pak.
