Jane Kennedy, Minister for Farming and the Environment, said: “UK dairy farmers are doing great work often in very tough circumstances. National Dairy Week is an excellent opportunity for all of us to celebrate the industry’s many achievements. They produce high-quality milk, yogurt, cheese and butter which are important to our diet, while cutting the environmental impact of the industry through the pioneering dairy roadmap.”
Dr Judith Bryans, Director of the Dairy Council and Registered Nutritionist, said: “The Dairy Council is proud to champion National Dairy Week, which we have organised as a dedicated time to focus on the positives about dairy. Dairy foods are an economical source of nutrition and have contributed greatly to the British diet throughout the centuries. National Dairy Week gives us the opportunity to talk about the goodness of dairy foods, and to celebrate the role of dairy in British history, as well as the role The Dairy Council has played over the years, albeit under different names, in promoting milk, cheese and yogurt as part of a healthy, balanced diet.”
Jim Paice, Shadow Agriculture Minister, said: “Britain has some of the highest welfare standards and best grass in Europe. We need to stop running our dairy industry down and show that it competes with the best. National Dairy Week gives us that opportunity. Thanks to the hard work of our farmers and processors, an enormous range of tasty and nutritious products is on offer to consumers.”
Dairy UK Director General, Jim Begg, said: “Britain loves dairy products. We know that more than 98% of consumers purchase foods made by our industry and this makes us very proud of dairy. The future is exciting, with a new generation of innovative dairy products due to deliver taste, nutrition and convenience for shoppers. National Dairy Week is an opportunity for our dairy farmers, processors and retailers to remind Britain why dairy is so good.”
“I see a lot of people in my clinic who, through misinformation, are dairy phobic,” said dietician and health writer Nigel Denby. “Dairy foods are an important part of a healthy, balanced diet. There are so many low-fat options within the dairy food category that we can all enjoy cheese, milk, yogurts and other dairy foods while keeping in control of our weight and getting the nutrients we need.”
