Waitrose, part of the employee-owned John Lewis Partnership , also said it would open more stores in motorway service stations, and was in talks with health and beauty retailer Boots to sell selected products in each other’s shops.
“It’s about democratising access to Waitrose,” said MD, Mark Price, saying the chain had identified around 6.5 million potential customers currently unable to easily access one of its stores.
“M&S already has hundreds of locations throughout the UK,” he said. “We’re at a very different stage of our organic development. I would expect with this announcement to pull away from them.”
