The CR Index results were announced in the Financial Times on 15 March 2012.
The CR Index provides a way for companies to transparently improve their social and environmental performance. Achieving gold means that Brakes Group is able to demonstrate ‘openness and transparency through effective public reporting of its material environmental and social issues, programmes and performance’.
Business in the Community commended Brakes’ progress in 2011, which included a clear CSER vision integrated across the business and good practice in managing all areas of responsibility, including collaboration with customers and suppliers, environmental initiatives, community programmes and the development of its employees.
Brakes was praised for its contribution to the continued reduction in road miles and CO2 emissions, including using rail to replace deliveries by road between the Midlands and Scotland, the introduction of liquid natural gas (LNG) vehicles, and collaborative work to reduce empty return journeys on primary delivery vehicles running across the UK distribution network in partnership with other transport companies.
New supply chain practices also contributed to the success, including collaborative projects with suppliers to reduce packaging, and a returnable crate initiative for customer deliveries.
Brakes also gained recognition in 2012 for its approach to responsible sourcing, namely the strategies it has in place for British sourcing through continued support of Red-Tractor-certified products, ethical sourcing through Fairtrade teas and coffees, and sustainable sourcing of MSC certified fish and Friends of The Sea accreditations.
