Fruity pasta, anyone? It’s really not as strange as you might think. Italian brand Surgital has launched a new pasta product with a ricotta and fruit filling, which really looks quite good. Featuring a sweet and sour taste, the creation is prepared in Romagna and is designed to be stored in a frozen location.
Mixing fruit with a range of savoury products looks like one of the more popular trends at SIAL this year. Perhaps this move in fruit related savoury creations is simply a matter of taste innovation, however, it could also signify an increasing health focus in the savoury food field.
Switzerland-based Micarna highlights this savoury health focus with its low-fat poultry sausage slices, which contain no animal or vegetable fat. This product replaces pork-based fat with egg protein, in a process that has received a wealth of plaudits at the SIAL show.
Immergut’s milk-based energy drink was drawing in more than its fair share of admirers at the Parisian show as well. The Germany-based company’s new drink is available in a range of different flavours, including Tutti Frutti and Moccacino, and includes guarana and caffeine in its ingredients.
The energy drink sector has seen a rise in milk related products over the past 12 months, with a variety of new releases appearing during this time (just look at Arriba Horchata Energy Cinnamon, EnerCoffee Energy Cappuccino and EnerChoco Energy Chocolate). I believe a vast range of new milk related energy drinks will enter the market in 2015, which will create a significant milk-based, sub-category in the energy drink field.
Shifting to the non-dairy sector, Thailand’s Asiatic Agro Industry has launched new Milky Coco. The attractively bottled beverage is a blend of coconut water and milk from coconut, which is lactose, dairy and gluten free. This is another interesting development in the coconut water market, which really tastes fantastic (apologies to the press room – I’m pretty sure I drank your entire Milky Coco stock).
My final day at SIAL 2014 is over, but the show proved to be one of the best examples of innovation, in the food and beverage industry, of the year. If anyone is considering attending the next edition of the event, I would thoroughly recommend it.
