Branded ‘The Community Shop’, this new store will offer heavily discounted surplus stock donated by leading UK supermarkets, as well as items with incorrect labelling or damaged packaging.
“It’s potentially a winner for lots of people,” said head of poverty at the Joseph Rowntree Foundation, Chris Goulden. “It’s good for the community, who can buy cheap food. It’s providing jobs and it’s good for companies, who otherwise would have to dispose of the food that’s been left.”
Customers at The Community Shop must be receiving benefits and live in a certain postcode area to purchase items at the store. Marks & Spencer, Asda and Tesco are among the brands that are backing the new shopping system.
