The report states that plastic variants gained the largest share of the global market for beverage closures last year, edging out their metal competitors by 1%.
Plastic closures now hold 49% of the market and their advance is primarily associated with a shift towards innovative, lightweight and cost-saving packaging.
A number of new innovations for plastic closures have been launched over the last two years, and the gap between metal and plastic closures is expected to widen in the future, with the latter projected to hold 52% of the market in 2017.
