10.12am – Holly Mockus from Sara Lee Corp talks about ‘Maintaining forward momentum through continuous improvement’.
9.44am – In a chat with Scott Mortensen from Symrise, he says the company is “cautiously optimistic” about its financial future now that we’re all coming out of the recession. You can listen to my brief conversation with Scott at this link.
9.11am – Change of schedule means that Dr Phillip Perkins from Bush Brothers is speaking now instead of Al Almanza from the US Department of Agriculture.
8.31am – Event chairperson Lou Nieto (ConAgra Foods) addresses attendees for the second morning in a row, and introduces the ‘pioneering’ speaker Yves Potvin, founder and president of Garden Protein International.
Potvin asks the question, why do we need innovation. His comments reflect much of what was said at the recent Global Dairy Congress in Salzburg, yet he’s stretching further in suggesting that innovation encompasses more than just new products. He congratulates Apple CEO Steve Jobs on his vision of true innovation, which again is ‘pioneering’.
He goes on to mention James Kraft, Henri Nestlé and John Kellogg, and says that society is “at a crossroads again … we have to make a change in how we feed people. There are more obese people now than there are hungry people in the world.”
The term ‘flexitarian’ is someone who looks to diversify their protein intake. It’s this consumer that the Gardein brand of products is targeting with its range of plant-based food.
