My top 10 drinks of 2012

My mid-flight beverage is always a tomato juice complete with ice and Worcester sauce, so the Spicy Tomato from
Del Monte’s new Occasions range
will definitely get me into the holiday mood.
If I’m thirsty, then I look for refreshing drinks and I’m delighted to report on
a new flavoured water with 100% natural ingredients from Feel Good Drinks.
Containing vitamins B5, B6, B7 and B12, the first out is pomegranate flavour, but I have a feeling there are more taste sensations on the horizon.
We can see from our FoodBev.com statistics that anything coffee-related is getting lots of traffic, and I can see why. Traditional, yet sophisticated, it’s great hot or cold and it works brilliantly with lots of flavours, from nuts to caramel, with creamy indulgence or as espresso-strength blacks. I love Jim Cregan’s carton-packed
Gingerbread iced coffee
– the perfect blend of festive cake and creamy coffee.
Niche and yet more niche drinks – that was one of the factors prompting the launch of the magazine
Beverage Innovation
– and there is now considerable growth in drinks aimed at babies. Take San Benedetto’s baby drink: a chamomile tea in strawberry, banana and mandarin flavours. Read an
interview with San Benedetto’s Pierluigi Tosato here.
In May, we saw the launch of a range of dilutable drinks bang on-trend. Norfolk Cordials, known for its elderflower cordial, introduced a tastebud-tingling range of Norfolk Cordials: red gooseberry and wild elderflower, rhubarb, orange & ginger, raspberry, strawberry and lime. As owner John McFarlane explained, “Our flavours are on the sharper side and for the more mature and discerning palate”.
Protein drinks are big business for the ‘Bro’ sector and Chicago-based
Core Power
from Fair Oaks Farms Brands has worked the natural sports recovery angle to best taste effect. Containing 26g of protein, they also contain 14g of essential amino acids and 5g of branched chain amino acids.
Fibre is also a growing buzz word in food and drink, and PepsiCo’s
Naked Fruit Juice & Oat Smoothie
makes the perfect breakfast on-the-go – in blueberry, apple and peach mango – all with oats.
I love the new higher juice content in drinks, along with pulp and fruit fibre.
Suntory’s acquisition of Orangina Schweppes
has seen the launch of Orangina with 12% juice in a new 420ml PET bottle in Japan. Sales target for 2012 was two million cases. I have a feeling they may have already surpassed that.
‘Zero’ has to be the biggest story of the past 12 months, with reformulation to ‘natural’ using stevia blended sweeteners. Personally, I think
the white can for Dr Pepper Zero
looks su
.
Finally (and amusingly), Blue Pelican Café in The Hamptons Store in Wales has special doggie dining tables for dog owners and their pets, just outside the restaurant. Mouthwatering Doggychinos are given with the compliments of the house. I just love that idea and can foresee an explosion in pooch refreshment!
