In Sweden, Arla Foods has made its Eko brand of organic milk available in Tetra Pak’s Tetra Rex bio-based carton packaging.
The move represents Arla’s commitment to products that “are manufacturer with respect for the environment” and “reducing our carbon footprint”. The line of milk is currently available in a number of varieties, including a light, 0.5% fat milk; 1.5% fat semi-skimmed milk; 3% fat milk; and 3% fat filmjölk, which is made using soured milk.
Featuring a TwistCap OSO 34 opening, the 1l carton uses plastics derived from sugar cane and paperboard, and is the world’s first packaging solution made entirely from plant-based materials. Earlier this month, we reported that the renewable carton was being rolled out globally following a successful trial period with Finnish dairy producer Valio.
Tetra Rex “is the only fully renewable package that offers complete material traceability – so consumers know that every part of the package they hold in their hands is derived only from plants,” Tetra Pak said.
Speaking after the announcement of the solution’s global rollout, Tetra Pak executive vice president of product management and commercial operations Charles Brand said: “Tetra Rex bio-based offers customers a fully renewable package made from materials that can be traced back to their plant-based source. It’s good for the environment, and it’s excellent for communicating with consumers… the product they actually hold in their hands is derived entirely from plants. [It’s] the pack that grows back.”
