FrieslandCampina will gradually phase in the use of Elopak’s Pure-pak bio-based beverage carton during the next 18 months, starting with its Campina range of fresh milk and buttermilk next month.
The bio-based polyethylene (PE) carton is made using certified organic residue and renewable paper, which creates useful applications for waste streams, FrieslandCampina said. The development falls in line with the Dutch dairy cooperative’s objective of securing an efficient and sustainable production chain, reducing carbon dioxide emissions by as much as 20% from Campina’s existing packaging solution.
The introduction will lead to Campina products in the Netherlands adopting the Pure-pak carton, as both companies seek to “significantly” increase the share of bio-based PE in cartons in the dairy sector.
FrieslandCampina Netherlands managing director Berndt Kodden said: “In recent years our beverage cartons has undergone a sustainable evolution. Now we proudly present a new milestone: a bio-based milk carton in which we invest in the transition to renewable raw materials.”
Elopak market area director for western Europe Bert Lohuis added: “Elopak is pleased to introduce the bio-based carton together with FrieslandCampina to the Dutch market. We hope that this introduction will lead to an increase in demand for ISCC Plus certified bio-based cartons.”
