Danish brewer Carlsberg has begun production at a new $75m brewery in central Myanmar that will increase the company’s capacity in the region by a further 60m litres.
Carlsberg will operate the production plant in Bago – 45 miles northeast of Yangon and 170 miles south of the capital, Naypyidaw – in collaboration with local food and beverage manufacturer Myanmar Golden Star. Production at the new facility, which began construction in 2013, will be concentrated on the domestic market with beer being distributed to major Burmese cities in a bid to significantly increase the country’s beer consumption.
Myanmar drinks an average of 6l of beer per person every year, but Carlsberg is seeking to drive this closer to the 38l of beer per head consumed in neighbouring Thailand. The brewery has developed its new Yoma brand of beer specifically for this purpose.
The inauguration follows the opening of a 10m hectolitre-capacity site in the city of Dali, in southern China.
Carlsberg group outgoing CEO Jørgen Buhl Rasmussen said: “Asia is an important growth region for the group and these two new breweries will place Carlsberg Group in the best possible position to capture a significant share of the future growth. China and Myanmar’s breweries will both embrace modern brewing technology whilst placing significant focus on the environmental impact.”
