“This playground serves dual purposes for Campbell,” said Sean Connolly, president of Campbell US. “For one, we continue our long-standing tradition of giving back to the community. Second, by building this playground from recycled materials, Campbell demonstrates its increased commitment to sustainability, which is important to our employees, our share owners and to people who purchase our products.”
The playground is made up of recycled and recyclable heavy duty aluminium and galvanised steel. Manufacturer Landscape Structures is an exclusive partner of Global ReLeaf. Via that programme, Landscape Structures plants trees to offset the carbon dioxide produced during the manufacturing process.
Approximately 25 Campbell US employees came out to Soupy Island on 25 June to build the playground. General Recreation Inc was commissioned for the project and designed the playground, distributed the materials and oversaw the building process. Another 25 employees were on site for the ribbon cutting, running field games for 50 Camden area children, with prizes including Camden Riversharks tickets and Campbell’s merchandise.
Campbell’s efforts will benefit approximately 500 inner city children that use Soupy Island Park on a daily basis during the summer months.
“Campbell has proven its commitment to Soupy Island through its refurbishment projects, product donations and the construction of a baseball diamond, soccer field, volleyball court and basketball court,” said Bob Perez, Soupy Island’s caretaker. “I really appreciate all that they’re doing to help these kids, and I’m particularly excited about this year’s newest addition, which the kids are already enjoying.”
Along with the new playground, Campbell donated a summer’s worth of Campbell’s soup, V8 Splash juice beverages and Pepperidge Farm Goldfish crackers.
