Hindal said: “We welcome today’s Department of Health Change4Life campaign which highlights the benefits of cutting down on alcohol.
“It can seem easy to mark the end of a long and stressful day by pouring a drink to unwind, but regularly drinking above the guidelines puts you at increased risk of damaging your health. We know from our own research that although the majority of people are aware of the term ‘units’, many underestimate how many are in their favourite drinks. This means they can easily end up drinking more than they realise.
“There’s nothing wrong with enjoying a drink but regularly drinking above the guidelines has both long and short term consequences for your health. This can range from poor sleep and weight gain, to increasing your chances of developing serious harms like cancer, heart and liver disease – which has no warning signs.”
