Nooyi, 57, heads up the largest food and beverage company in the United States, which saw shares hit an all-time high earlier this year. Under Nooyi’s leadership, PepsiCo has expanded beyond the flat domestic soda business, entering fast-growing categories such as yogurt and hummus. Today, PepsiCo boasts 22 billion-dollar brands.
At number one is IBM chairman, president and CEO Ginni Romett. Two other food industry businesses are represented in the top ten, with Mondelez International chair and CEO Irene Rosenfeld at number 6, and Archer Daniels Midland chair, president and CEO Patricia Woertz in seventh place.
Lower down the rankings, Wal-Mart Stores’ Sam’s Club CEO and president Rosalind Brewer is in 15th place, Campbell Soup president and CEO Denise Morrison is in 23rd, and Wal-Mart’s EVP and CEO Gisel Ruiz in in 24th. At 38, is CST Brands chair, president and CEO Kim Bowers and finally, up from 43 to 39, comes Ingredion chair, president and CEO Ilene Gordon.
The Most Powerful Women in Business list is compiled by Fortune editors, who consider four criteria: the size and importance of the woman’s business in the global economy, the health and direction of the business, the arc of the woman’s career (resume and runway ahead), and social and cultural influence.
