Wisconsin-based Bakalars Sausage Co has agreed to acquire Cargill’s Schweigert brand of hot dogs for an undisclosed amount.
The selloff follows seven years after Cargill acquired the sausage brand as part of its acquisition of Willow Brook Foods in 2008. As part of the move, production will move from its current base in southern Minnesota to Bakalar’s operation in La Crosse, western Wisconsin – just over the Mississippi River.
According to Cargill, the company will use the factory floor space vacated by Schweigert to increase its output in other areas of the US cooked meat category.
“There is increasing demand for cooked meat products from current and potential customers, and we will use the space at Albert Lea to expand that capability,” Cargill’s Mike Martin told the Minneapolis Star Tribune on Tuesday.
“The Schweigert deal will complement its existing product line and expand its business,” the newspaper wrote.
And Bakalars Sausage Co president Mike Bakalars called the transaction “a wonderful addition to our portfolio of specialty meat items”.
