The world’s largest chemical producer BASF has increased its capacity for vitamin A production by 25% in response to what it describes as “rising demand”.
The company has expanded an existing plant in Ludwigshafen, Germany, with the additional capacity being made immediately available.
Dr Christopher Rieker, head of BASF’s animal nutrition business, said: “With our vitamin portfolio, we are leaders in supply reliability and high quality: Our vitamin A stands out thanks to exceptional product stability and bio-availability. This capacity increase shows our commitment to the growing vitamin A market.”
Vitamin A is an essential and fat-soluble micronutrient used by the human and animal nutrition industries in feed and food products, and also by the personal care sector. It supports the function of the eyes, lungs and skin, helps to prevent growth disorders and supports skeletal development, BASF said.
The company, which is the world leader in chemicals, employs more than 112,000 employees and generated sales of €74bn in 2014.
