McDonald’s has developed a portable packaging concept that allows consumers to suspend their hot drink and food from the handlebar of their bicycle.
The McBike, which pulls together to form a hooked handle, features two square compartments for food items and a hole in the bottom that is small enough to hold a McDonald’s beverage cup in place.
It was developed by Buenos Aires-based advertising agency Tribal and was first launched in Copenhagen; the Danish capital is widely reported to have more bicycles than inhabitants, and 50% of the city’s population commute to their place of school or work every day. After expanding the concept to Colombia, McDonald’s has plans to roll out the McBike format in cities such as Amsterdam and Tokyo.
Customers place their order and collect their McBike bag using the restaurant chain’s drive-thru lane. It is hoped that the scheme will help to promote the continued use of green modes of transport and increase McDonald’s convenience offering to cyclists.
“The world is moving towards sustainable energy,” the company said in a video explaining the development of the McBike. “People cherish and choose a healthier lifestyle.”
